Characteristics of an educational leader

An educational leader is someone who gives direction to educators and provides the necessary skills and resources to make this possible. These individuals work closely with teachers to develop a quality educational program and assist them with the planning cycle. They can also suggest ways to improve assessment practices.

Below are the traits of an educational leader:

450-hour field experience

The UC Berkeley School of Education’s innovative doctorate program in educational leadership includes research seminars, LEAD field experiences, and a dissertation intended for submission to journals. Graduates of the LEAD program pursue career paths that range from C-level leadership in school districts to positions in non-profits, policy, and global educational ventures. A typical student in the program has approximately 15 years of work experience. Some students are working towards a doctorate in education, while others are working toward a terminal degree in the field.

Passion for teaching

It is essential for educators to build the capacity of their teachers to provide effective teaching. Among the best ways to accomplish this goal is by sending faculty to home countries or westward. At the same time, they should train teachers to work in higher education. Passion for teaching is a core competency of a great educator, and it can be learned. Listed below are some ways that educators can boost this trait among their staffs.

Authenticity

The most effective school leaders are courageous, authentic, and have the courage to speak their mind. Authentic school leaders inspire staff, have the courage to make tough decisions, and have a sense of purpose. They recognize and embrace their strengths and weaknesses and make decisions from their core values. Authentic school leaders are also more willing to share their views with staff, students, and the community. This type of leadership is a sign of a leader’s true character, and can create trust and a strong foundation for their school.

Empowering teachers

As education leaders, teachers should have more say in curriculum, rules and regulations. Teachers have a profound impact on students and their learning, yet often do not receive the recognition they deserve. To empower teachers to be their best, schools should invite all teachers to serve on action teams, provide feedback and acknowledge their contributions to the school community. In addition, educators should feel supported and encouraged to pursue their passions in teaching, from sports to the arts.
